Summary of the Report

Global water treatment chemicals market was worth USD 28.9 Billion in 2019. It is projected to grow at a compound annual rate (CAGR), of 3.2% between 2020 and 2030. This growth is due to growing demand for sugar and ethanol, fertilizers and geothermal power generation. The market will also see promising growth in Africa and the Middle East due to increasing adoption of saline treatment to meet the growing water demand. The most popular technology in the Middle East is desalination. Saudi Arabia relies heavily on desalination to meet its water needs. Due to its large use of water for industries such as oil and gas, the region has emerged as a major consumer of industrial chemicals. Desalination is the most popular process used in the region. It uses scale inhibitors and coagulants on a large scale.

The rapid growth of the industrial sector and urbanization will result in a huge increase in water treatment chemicals markets for flocculants, coagulants, corrosion inhibitor and pH booster. These chemicals will continue to be in high demand due to the significant decline in freshwater resources and stringent regulations. A prominent trend in the market is the rise in demand for fluid treatment units that can be used to treat small and medium-sized manufacturers in an in-situ process to achieve zero discharge.

Product Insights

The largest product segment, with a revenue share exceeding 35% in 2019, was coagulants and flocculants. This is because most treatment plants include sedimentation. Coagulation, flocculation are used mainly in the tank of chemical products for oil and gas plants. The sedimentation process is accelerated by the coagulation process. These coagulants come in both organic and inorganic forms, such as aluminum sulfate and aluminum hydroxide chloride. The purpose of adding coagulants to wastewater treatment is to remove 90% or more suspended solid particles.

As they protect manufacturing systems, and maintain operational efficiency, biocides and disinfectants are the second most popular product category. They prevent hazardous microbial growth and reduce contamination. Controlling microbiological activity in manufacturing and industrial processes is critical. To ensure water conditions for food, water waste and treated water, biocides and disinfectants can be used. They are used in the sugar and ethanol sectors to ensure that wastewater is treated properly. Biocides can also be used to control bacteria during the ethanol fermentation process.

End-use Insights

Municipal emerged as the largest end use segment in 2019, with a revenue share exceeding 40%. This is due to the extensive use of chemicals for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment applications. The major players have shifted their focus to reusing and recycling water due to increasing water scarcity in developed countries of North America and Europe.

Industrialists have been encouraged to improve or establish wastewater treatment and reuse facilities due to the increasing cost of municipal waste treatment. Fluid treatment includes emulsion breaking, flocculation, and sludge removal.

Due to the high oil refineries' use and consequently high wastewater generation, oil and gas became a major end-use segment. Chemical plants and petroleum refineries use steam and water to perform a range of processes, including desalination, fluid catalytic cracking unit and cooling towers. In order to ensure that petroleum refineries and chemical plants can continue to operate reliably and sustainably, there has been a need for efficient water treatment. This will increase the demand for chemicals for oil & natural gas end use in the future.

Application Insights

With a more than 45% revenue share in 2019, raw water treatment was the most popular application. This is due to its increasing use in industrial settings for cooling and product formulations. It is used to pretreatment sourced water to increase process performance and product efficiency. It protects industrial equipment against corrosion, scaling, fouling, and other damage. Each treatment is different so the process will vary. The process includes coagulation and flocculation as well as sedimentation, filtration and disinfection.

Because of its widespread use in the petrochemical industry, boilers were chosen as the most prominent application segment. Boiler water treatment protects boiler components and piping against damage from contaminants in boiler feeds. These contaminants can include organic material such as silica, aluminum, copper, iron, calcium, magnesium, dissolved gas hardness, and suspended solids. If boiler feed water is not properly treated, fouling corrosion and scaling can occur. This can lead to costly maintenance fees, downtime, boiler failure, and increased fuel consumption.

Regional Insights

North America had a greater market share than 25% in 2019, and was the largest. Technological advancements in hydraulic fracturing have led to an increase in production of unconventional sources, including tight oil and shale gas in North Dakota and West Texas. This has led to a greater penetration of water treatment facilities within the upstream oil-and gas sector. This is expected to have a significant positive impact on the market during the forecast period.

The U.S. is expected to grow at 2.4% CAGR over the forecast period. This is due to strict government regulations that regulate the production and disposal of wastewater. The International Trade Administration (ITA) states that the United States is a world leader in energy production, consumption and supply (presence of thermoelectric power stations). Market growth will be positively impacted by the rising demand for chemicals to treat wastewater from the U.S. Power Industry.

In the near future, the growth of the manufacturing, industrial and power sectors will increase the demand for boiler chemicals in emerging economies in Asia Pacific. Pretreated water is more in demand in China due to the presence of heavy metals and suspended particles. China Water Risk (CWR), works for many government agencies in China and worldwide. CWR provides information about the impacts and risks of wastewater from China's agriculture, food & beverage, power and textile sectors. CWR reports have been proven to be useful in addressing challenges and thus contribute to water treatment efforts in China.

Market Share Insights & Key Companies

The market is fragmented by nature. The high level of integration that manufacturers have is a hallmark of their business. In-house raw material production facilities, as well as long-term supply agreements with raw material suppliers. The companies sell their products in both domestic and international markets via various distribution channels, including direct supply agreements and third party suppliers. These suppliers not only purchase the final products from the manufacturer but also distribute them throughout the region through a vast product distribution network.

The business activities of companies can now include direct supply, manufacturing, distribution, application, and control over the final product. Companies have seen their presence at all stages of the value-chain increase profits by lowering the cost of distribution as well as allowing them to better manage the pricing of products.
