The Global Cadmium in Semiconductors and Electronics Market size is projected to reach USD 1.6 billion by 2028. The demand for cadmium is primarily driven by the increasing use of semiconductors and electronic devices such as smartphones and laptops which require more power-efficient materials that are also cost effective.

Cadmium Sulphide (CdS) is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula CdS. It belongs to group II/VI of chalcogenides and has applications as a photoconductor, photocell and solar cell absorber layer material because it absorbs visible light more efficiently than infrared light while still having some transparency at wavelengths around 350 nm.

On basis of Type, the market is segmented into Cadmium Selenide, Cadmium Sulphide, Cadmium Oxide, Cadmium Arsenide, Cadmium Telluride, Cadmium Zinc Telluride and others.

Cadmium Selenide:

Cadmium selenides are semiconductor materials used in low-power devices such as solar cells and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). They have a bandgap of about 0.55 eV which makes them more efficient than silicon at similar temperatures for converting sunlight into electricity.

Cadmium Sulphide:

Cadmium sulphide is a toxic compound of cadmium and sulfur that has applications in infrared detectors, phototubes for low-intensity illumination such as street lights or home use, photocathodes in image intensifiers used in military equipment like night vision goggles. Cadmium sulphide absorbs light over an ultraviolet to near-infrared spectrum which makes it useful for these purposes.

Cadmium Oxide:

Cadmium oxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula CdO that belongs to group II/VI of chalcogenides and has applications as photoconductors or photosensitisers because it absorbs visible light better than infrared light while still being transparent over a wide wavelength range.

Cadmium Arsenide:

Cadmium arsenide is a compound with the chemical formula CdAs that belongs to group II/VI of chalcogenides and has applications in lasers or infrared detectors. Cadmium arsenide absorbs light over an ultraviolet to near-infrared spectrum which makes it useful for these purposes.

Cadmium Telluride:

Cadmium telluride is a chemical compound with the formula CdTe. It belongs to group II/VI of chalcogenides and has applications as photoconductors or photodetectors because it absorbs visible light better than infrared light while still being transparent over a wide wavelength range.

Cadmium Zinc Telluride:

Cadmium zinc telluride is a compound with the formula CdZnTe. It belongs to group II/VI of chalcogenides and has applications as photoconductors or photodetectors because it absorbs visible light better than infrared light while still being transparent over a wide wavelength range.

On the basis of Application, the market is segmented into Photo Resistors, Electrodes For Storage Batteries, Transparent Conductors and Others. Photo Resistors segment is expected to dominate the cadmium in the semiconductors and electronics market during the forecast period.

On basis of Region, the market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Middle East & Africa. North America is expected to be the biggest market for cadmium in semiconductors and electronics owing to the high demand for electronic devices such as mobile phones. The region accounted for more than 40% share of global revenue in 2016 followed by Europe which has estimated to account for about 30%. Latin American countries are expected to witness significant growth rates during the forecast period due to favorable macro-economic factors coupled with a surge in infrastructure spending across emerging markets including Brazil, India, and China.

Key Constraints for Cadmium in Semiconductors and Electronics Market:

Global Scarcity of Raw Materials: The cadmium market is significantly driven by the availability and price of raw materials. Shortages in supply, higher prices for certain grades, and increased volatility often lead to significant fluctuations in the global demand for semiconductors as well as electronics due to its dependence on other key elements such as silicon that acts as a catalyst.

Restrictive Regulations On Cadmium Emissions: Countries have started implementing measures restricting emissions of toxic chemicals including cadmium which may hamper growth prospects over time. For instance, China has announced plans to improve air quality through the implementation of stricter regulations on harmful pollutants leading to reduced cadmium consumption while simultaneously boosting demand from regions where restrictions are not imposed such as Latin America.
